ECO DU is an award-winning student-led environmental think tank that campaigns Durham University to improve its green policy in line the climate emergency. The group’s work is vitally important as the University undertakes a 10-year expansion plan.
We cover everything from Estates and Buildings, to Curriculum, to Procurements, researching how the University can operate more sustainably. We work with different departments and the University administration, as well as partnering with the Students Union.
Our current projects include developing a pilot module about the climate crisis, sourcing sustainable stash, and working with the University’s Estates and Building team to research passive house designing standards.
In June 2020, ECO DU won Best Environmental Initiative at the Durham Student Volunteering Awards.
My Role – Durham University Climate Strike
In order to raise awareness of our work, empower students, and pressurise the University, ECO DU hosts climate strikes on campus.
In November 2019, ECO DU collaborated with Amnesty International to host the first Durham University Climate Strike. I was one of five co-ordinators, taking the lead on content creation and marketing.
My Facebook event, and graphics, reached over 24,000 people organically online.
My Role – Arts and Graphics Coordinator
Following the success of the November strike, I was invited to join ECO DU’s newly-formed Executive Committee. I took on the role of Arts and Graphics Coordinator to ensure the organisation built a reputable brand and continued to attract students to future actions.
I designed events banners, infographics, Facebook profile frames, as well as redesigning the organisation’s logo.
I also hosted a Zoom webinar on Digital Activism, drawing on my work with ECO DU and Amnesty International to provide a comprehensive guide to using social media.
