No Heart in the Heart of the City is only Fossway’s third single and already the band have highlighted the versatility of their sound through the lighter Parasite and more guitar-orientated Mannequin. Comprised of Daniel Mason (Vocals and Guitar), Harry Lowery (Drums), Jacob Herrington (Guitar) and John Lennox (Bass and Vocals), these Newcastle-based musicians are going places.
From the first chord of No Heart.. I was immediately angry at the misspent youth I never had (unless you count an unhealthy obsession with Twilight like every other pre-teen at the time). The beat is undeniably catchy and you’ll find yourself furiously nodding along before long. Initially, the lyrics struggle to find their feet against the heavy guitar but once the falsetto cuts through, we’re talking rebellion with ease.
I love Fossway’s celebration of musicianship; the timing, beautiful riffs and solos present a mature sound that shows off the real potential of the group. Notes of Muse and Nothing But Thieves match perfectly with the single’s political condemnation of artistic suffocation. Daniel Mason (Frontman and Guitarist) says inspiration for the piece comes from ‘the struggle for creative people to get their art seen/heard and, consequently, make a living from their artistic endeavours’. I feel your pain.
Listening for the first time, you really get a sense of the urgency and scale of the issue in lyrics such as ‘don’t even express yourself, don’t even make a sound’. This single is not aimed at pleasing the listeners of light pop and vapid club remixes filling the charts but is an act of rebellion in celebrating craftsmanship and self-expression.
Any creative people out there will be certain to feel an affinity with Fossway’s approach to music. So dive into that super guitar and let No Heart in the Heart of the City satisfy your appetite to scream at the woes of the world.

Many thanks to Fossway’s representatives for getting in touch to review the single.
